Independence

I wanted to understand how independence could have been interpreted to the people of senegal when they gained independence in August of 1960. I believe it would have been a time of infinite possibilities. I imagined them leaving behind the sands of time of their french colonial past and moving into a phase of celebration. I wanted the Lake Retba to be evident and to carry them to their future which is seen with the pinnacle of the Place de l'Obélisque blooming from the baobab flower. La Place de l'Obélisque is inscribed with the year of independence in roman letters, MCMLX, on on the otherside are Adinkra symbols for protection, prosperity and peace.
