One of the enduring memories of my childhood was Sunday school, a place I would often begrudgingly attend. However, the teachings from there came together to form the basic foundation of my beliefs.
One of my all-time favorite Bible characters is David, second only to Solomon, and I feel his story is a fine picture of a diamond in the rough. I have come to see the defining moment in his life as definitely being the day he was anointed by the prophet Samuel. Completely oblivious to the fact he was about to be anointed king., he was faraway in the bush tending his father's flock. One puny boy anointed as king of a nation.
In this fan fiction rendition of David's story, a female protagonist takes center stage as a shepherd. Although the choice is arbitrary, it stems from my imagination of the concept of a woman fulfilling this role traditionally associated with men without any intention to modify or enhance the original narrative of David in the biblical text. This piece, to me, serves as a poignant reminder of the beauty that lies beyond the superficial, transcending mere appearances. It beckons us into a realm of boundless possibilities that lies inside each of us and serves as a steadfast reminder that God's work within us knows no bounds, unhindered by the constraints of our environment or lineage.
