Impression management, ADHD Masking
Individuals with ADHD may use impression management to conceal their symptoms and mask their ADHD. For me, this is something I became great at, which led to a time when people were like, "I knew you 'had ADHD' but you were successful and had non of the obvious signs."
Impression management refers to the process of controlling or manipulating the way others perceive us. People engage in impression management to create a positive image of themselves and to meet social expectations. For individuals with ADHD, impression management can be a way to hide their symptoms and fit in with their surroundings.
People with ADHD may engage in impression management by developing coping mechanisms or strategies to manage their symptoms. They may use calendars, lists, or reminders to keep track of their tasks or avoid situations that trigger their symptoms. They may also engage in social behaviors or conform to social norms to fit in with others, even if it requires significant effort.
While impression management can help individuals with ADHD manage their symptoms, it can also lead to masking and hiding the true extent of their ADHD. Masking can lead to delayed diagnosis, misdiagnosis, or lack of appropriate support, as their symptoms are not fully understood or recognized.
Therefore, it is essential to recognize the relationship between ADHD masking and impression management and to provide support and accommodations that allow individuals with ADHD to feel comfortable showing their true selves. This can help individuals with ADHD manage their symptoms more effectively and improve their overall well-being.
