An intrusion detection system (IDS) is a device or software application that monitors a network for malicious activity or policy violations. They are commonly used in networks where confidentiality and privacy must be secured. The Panopticon is a surveillance system designed by the philosopher Jeremy Bentham, where watchmen stand at a point where all other subjects can be seen while the watchers stand hidden.
