Hadrian's Wall was built in 122 AD by Roman emperor Hadrian. It was designed to keep raiders at bay and ran from Wallsend to Bowness on Solway in England. It ran for 73 miles (117 kilometers) and stood at approximately 12 feet (3.7 meters) high! Emperor Hadrian built the wall to create a physical barrier to protect the boundaries of his empire. The Britannian tribes and other raiders were intent on fighting against Roman rule and there were constant problems. As a result, Hadrian kept them in check by stationing soldiers all along the wall to keep anyone with malicious intent away. Over time, the wall's upkeep ceased and once the Romans left Britain in 383 AD the wall was abandoned.
