According to classical mythology, griffins were animals of light. They were sacred to Apollo, god of the sun, and pulled his chariot on his daily journey from East to West. Along with the tripod and the lyre, these creatures became a symbol of this divinity and its worship. They lived both in the Asian region of Scythia and in the East, in India.
