The origin of the griffin goes back to the Near East: it appears in archaeological remains of paintings and sculptures of the ancient Babylonians, Assyrians and Persians. There are representations of taps dating from about 3000 BC. they appeared on cosmetic palettes from Hierakonpolis, Egypt and on cylinder seals in Susa, Persia. More recent representations of griffins have also been found in Syria and Anatolia in the Bronze Age, roughly 1950-1550 BC.
