Gokayama (五箇山, "Five Mountains") is an area in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. This area is one of the heaviest snowfall areas in the world, and this climate has given birth to the Gassho-zukuri style (合掌造り, "prayer-hands construction" style) houses with large, steeply sloped roofs. Gokayama was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1995.
