Fire is one of humanity’s earliest symbiotic partnerships with a powerful force; one that offered warmth, protection, transformation, and continuity in exchange for care, restraint, and attention. What began as a reciprocal relationship gradually shifted into one of entitlement, where stewardship was replaced by power and taken without regard for the consequences.
This artwork was created during a series of uncontrolled human-caused fires in British Columbia, Canada. It considers how relationships with technology change over time, slowly morphing or dissolving. Technology, or tools utilized by humans for survival, can be repurposed with malicious intent, contributing to environmental destruction not through failure of the tool itself, but through the erosion of responsibility in those who wield it.
Proceeds from the sale of this artwork will be donated to Bosque Gracias Artist Residency (Patagonia) to rebuild homes and the residency lost to the fires of January 2026.
