Getting back into coding again for a bit but the thing I've noticed since I last did it (which was a while ago now) is that a lot of the development focus seems to have gone more server-side in the last decade or so.
I've always been a fan of client-side solutions since it can help to disperse the resource needs on both ends but Web2 has obviously opted for more centralized control. (e.g. streaming music replacing personal mp3s is a good example.)
In general, the message to the user seems to be "don't worry, we'll take care of it". The infantilization of the user does show up in the way UI/UX is done, too.
This wouldn't be an issue if the apps we have today took care of people's deeper needs but that's obviously not the case here - it's become more about controlling people's options and what they're able to see. (You can't be trusted with your own data, after all.)
I do think there is a hunger for something different, though, and #Web3 can be an excuse to start doing things differently than before. Decentralization is not desirable in all circumstances, but there are many where it should be where it's currently not. I think we'll sort it out eventually.
