Clouds are generated by steam rising from one of the largest geothermal power plants in the world, which draws energy and heat from the heart of a volcano in Iceland. This is Hellisheidi Power Station. Geothermal power plants use heat from deep inside the Earth to generate steam, which spins turbines for electricity production. Once the steam cools off, the remaining water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process again. Geothermal is an efficient and circular way to create energy, which Iceland has been doing for decades. Energy production is a major contributor to climate change, and fossil fuels account for almost 80% of the global emissions of CO2. Scientists claim we only have a few years to halt and reverse our overconsumption, our emissions and our wasteful attitude in order to save our changing climate, the natural habitats, and, ultimately, ourselves.
