The body in its totality represents, before anything else and in contrast to the soul or spirit, the earthly existence and the rootedness in the MATERIAL life. However, and as it could not be otherwise, each of its parts is and has been throughout history fertile ground for the development of symbolic and metaphorical fields of meaning.
