I took this photograph near Istanbul, Turkey, around 1970. After my combat tour in Vietnam, I traveled through Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, the Middle East, and Europe—photographing all the way. This shot was overlooking the Bosphorus Strait. I loved how it came together—the opposite shore, the sun, the lines of the boats. The man standing, and the water filling the boat, were unusual enough to make an interesting picture: nothing more or less than a human managing a predicament.
