In his youth, tribal elders bestowed upon him the revered name, Thabiti, which in Kenyan indigenous societies means “a true man.” His strength and prowess on the battlefield won him peer group admiration. And his relentless spirit to protect his people won their hearts. Using burnt ash and clay pigments, his tribe celebrates the human form in bold body-painted stripes accentuated with minimalist ornamentation using feathers, cowrie shells, and animal teeth transforming their bodies into walking masterpieces of artistic display. They paint faces and arms and legs, buttocks and breasts and genitalia. All is a canvas to explore imaginative design in celebration of joy and pride.
