Faunus, son of Picus and grandson of Saturn or Cronos, was the Italian god of nature. In some versions he is the father of Latino, who reigned over all of Latium when Aeneas, the ancestor of the Romans, arrived on the peninsula (see Aeneas). Faunus greatly resembles the Greek god Pan, with whom he was eventually equated. He served as a patron for cattle and also had the gift of predicting the future. After the battle against the Etruscans, the Roman soldiers heard his voice coming out of the forest, announcing to them that the enemy had lost one more man, prompting the Romans to continue the battle until the defeat of Etruria.
