Tools and Techniques To create depth, artists use a variety of pencil grades:
Hard Pencils (H, 2H): Used for the initial light sketch and the subtle veins or light shading in the white of the eye.
Medium Pencils (HB, 2B): Used for the mid-tones of the skin and the general structure of the iris.
Soft Pencils (4B, 6B, 8B): Essential for the pupil, the dark outer ring of the iris (limbal ring), and the shadows under the top eyelid.
