About a billion years ago there was an extremely violent explosion of star formation in the center of the Milky Way. Contrary to what scientists have predicted so far, the formation of stars in the center has not been continuous throughout the life of the Milky Way and can be better defined as abrupt and with long pauses. The outbreak occurred after billions of years of tranquility and gave rise to more than 100,000 supernovae.
