The researchers of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) are in fact finding themselves in serious difficulty in their hunt for alien civilizations. The BBC reports that radio astronomers would like to expand two observatories with new hardware, but are currently unable to do so precisely due to the phenomenon of mining.
"We'd love to use the latest GPUs and we can't have them," said Dan Werthimer, chief scientist of the Berkeley Seti Research Center and co-founder of SETI @ home. "This is limiting our search for extraterrestrials, to try and answer the question 'Are we alone? Is there anyone else out there?'
Maybe they should stop looking at the stars for a minute, and look in the right place.
All of this comes from a world older than we could imagine.
