Scientists at the University of Southampton have achieved a remarkable feat in data preservation by encoding the human genome onto a five-dimensional glass crystal. A five-dimensional glass crystal containing the human genome was placed in a time capsule and stored in a vault within an Austrian salt cave. Salt caves, such as those in the Hallstatt mine, offer an exceptionally stable environment characterized by constant temperature, low humidity, and minimal oxygen, all of which contribute to the preservation of delicate materials. The combination of the glass crystal's inherent stability and the protective conditions of the salt cave creates an environment where the data could potentially remain intact for billions of years
