Elegy was one of the first songs I wrote using electric guitar, having previously only played acoustic. I got a Les Paul sometime around 2006 and started recording basic concepts. Elegy began as a little guitar melody over an atmospheric synthesizer arpeggio and by 2010 I had expanded it to a minimal disco composition. Around this time Zac came in and recorded the bassline which finally gave it a sense of completion. If memory serves this was the last song we finished and fittingly serves as the album closer. Hence the name, Elegy felt like an end and in many ways it was an end to life as I had known it.
In 2010 I quit work as a graphic designer to focus on completing Dive. I turned it in in February of 2011 and it was released in November. Soon after Tycho began the transition from something I was doing in my spare time to a full-fledged band and Zac, Rory and I spent the better part of the next decade touring and recording.
