Durado

"Durado had never been brave or adventurous. He had worked most of his adult life as a valve technician in the time portal-bays, supporting the equipment that made transporting equipment and humans between galactic eras possible.

His life had been simple with a wife and a single daughter that had been his primary source of joy. Until his wife had been exposed to a new off-world virus, probably picked up by one of the time travelers that had entered their world through the portal-bays, but it had killed her and left Durado bereft.

Now only eight months later, the pain of loss still fresh enough to come in daily waves…his only daughter had taken her own life without explanation.

And Durado broke apart…his personality boiling away like steam from a pot."
