The beads of a Sensitive Fern's winter foliage is mirrored as an indistinct impression as a cold wind blows through the stand. (Onoclea sensibilis)
The perception of the physical self is an intimate experience. It is vulnerable and can be positive or negative in nature.
Positive self image shines through with confidence and can be passive. Negative self image on the other hand can be devastating and can introduce obsessive compulsive behaviours. These can include; excessive exercise, drug and alcohol use, cosmetic surgeries, compulsive grooming, as well as eating disorders such as dieting, meal restrictions, bulimia, anorexia, and bingeing - all of which cause strain and stress in the body, particularly the organs and the mind.
The body and mind can also disconnect by way of disassociation due to trauma and abuse. This can alter the perception of self as well, causing the individual to feel separated from the body they are attempting to change. Altering oneself to fit in is a common way to seek security within a social group. Altering the body is a control seeking behaviour that is used to provide a sense of control when elsewhere in the individual's life, there is little to none.
By celebrating all types of bodies and providing supports for those who experience trauma will give control back to the individual in a healthy way, free from judgment and shame.
