Salacia was the female divinity of the sea in Roman mythology. She was worshiped as the goddess of saltwater and presided over the ocean's depths, in addition to being Neptune's wife. Salacia was in awe of her suitor and wanted to preserve her virginity, so she hid from Neptune in the Atlantic Ocean. Neptune sent a dolphin to look for Salacia and persuade the fair nymph to return and share his throne. This majestic dolphin was awarded a place in the heavens, where he now forms the constellation Delphinus.
