The Canadian Eskimo Dog is one of the oldest and rarest purebred indigenous domestic canines. As an arctic working dog, the Qimmit (Inuit for dog) were the workhorses of the northern indigenous communities, pulling loads over long distances as part of dogsled teams. They were brought to North America from Siberia by the Thule people over a thousand years ago.
The breed is currently threatened with extinction, with approximately 300 purebred dogs remaining scattered in the subarctic and the arctic circle.
