Negative bias causes negative events to be felt more deeply and also is the tendency to dwell on these events.
For every positive memory, the brain will remember countless negative ones. The mind wants to learn, improve and reduce future external harms so it picks apart the fine details of events and conversations to find faults and room for improvement. With no new stimulus, it replays and solidifies the minutiae into memory.
People with chronic pain conditions and disabilities often have little reprieve from pain and isolation, making this self-consuming effect a difficult challenge to manage.
A misplaced key, an embarrassing moment, a stumbled speech, an accident, a violent encounter. The brain dissects these the same way, but unfortunately it is not always productive.
The idle mind will eat itself. Providing stimulation by learning a new skill or language, exercising, socializing, and expressing creatively through art, music or dance can allow new pathways to be formed in the mind and new positive memories to be created.
