A desert is an arid region with little rainfall (usually less than 250 mm per year) and little vegetation. These ecosystems, which cover about one-third of the Earth's surface, include hot deserts such as the Sahara and cold deserts such as the Gobi. Despite the harsh conditions, deserts are home to unique species such as cacti and animals such as camels and lizards that have adapted to water scarcity.
