The nailsmith drew a square bar of iron, which had been heated to white heat at around 1350 °C in the forge fire, by forging and counter-forging on an anvil, so that it was conically shaped and sharpened towards the end. He then cut off the bar (scoring) and stuck the nail he had started with the tip first into one of the holes in the anvil or into the attached (hammered) goat's foot-shaped nail iron and compressed the protruding end to the desired head shape. Sometimes a counter-forging die was also used to create a special shape, e.g. a perfect round head.
