I found this canvas in the dirt on the side of the road driving home from a friend’s house.
I brought it home and began cleaning and prepping it -
I laid my tape down to preserve some of the original artwork and reached for my stencils.
I asked my friend Dallas (a.k.a. Sketty Wap), who was painting an angry city beside me, “What’s the first word starting with the letter ‘D’ that comes to mind?”
“…Delinquent. ” He said with certainty and self-pride, he liked that word.
I quickly replied, “ Too long - second word. ”
And without a moment of hesitation and complete confidence, he said…..
“ D A P P L E ”
This seemingly random, yet certainly honest name for my genesis entirely captures my style of art.
He didn’t hesitate, he listened to his gut, and he didn’t question or make fun of himself before he said it. He didn’t think twice.
Neither do I when I make my first brush stroke on a new canvas.
“ D A P P L E ” is one of my best examples of Automatism Surrealism.
If it feels right, I do it. If it doesn’t, I don’t.
