The term "cyborg" itself was introduced by Manfred Klines[en] and Nathan Klein in 1960 in connection with their concept of empowering a person to survive outside the Earth. This concept was the result of a reflection on the need for a closer, more intimate relationship between man and machine as space exploration becomes a reality. A developer of medical equipment and electronic information processing devices, Klein was the principal scientist in the Dynamic Simulation Laboratory at Rockland Hospital in New York.
