Cosmic Wabi-Sabi computational design project explores the beauty of algorithm-generated digital sculptures. Each one of 128 Cosmic Wabi Sabi's has been created using a "sculpture master" - an algorithm, which selects a random TX hash from ETH blockchain and translates it into a three-dimensional sculpture.
Wabi-Sabi is an ancient aesthetic philosophy rooted in Japanese and Chinese culture. It represents a concept of appreciating the beauty of aesthetical imperfection in nature and things around us. As everything in nature has been formed into a certain appearance for a good reason, we have to be able to view imperfections as beauty in a naturally imperfect world. Cosmic Wabi-Sabi project shares the same ideology. With irregular shapes and uneven surface textures, it is inspired by traditional ceramics handmade by masters and used in tea ceremonies. All 128 Cosmic Wabi-Sabi's are digital sculptures created by our own master - a computational master, in a form of an algorithm.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION In this project, we use a generative design algorithm to transform the TX Hash on the Ethereum blockchain into ASCII codes. The codes are remapped into variables which then are implemented into mathematical equations that define a design. The design is sliced into sections to extract a Non-Planar Fused Deposition Modelling toolpath for 3d printing. The toolpath is then visualized with a raytracing rendering engine into the GIF animation. This animation is also a design that can be fabricated with a custom-built 3D printer.
The artwork includes a high resolution 4K/60FPS uncompressed file.
