Sonnet
To Frederic Nietzsche
So that in this life the spirit may wear out
In vain meditations, meditating man?
Scalped every corpse in the world
And, in the end, you found nothing... and, in the end, you found nothing!...Madness destroyed everything you architected
And Germany trembled at your deep groan!...
What good did it do you then to study deeply
The man and the slug and the rock and the stone and the oak and the rod? For, to penetrate the mystery of the slates,
It was your duty to probe the substance of things
You built a different world out of illusions, You didn't recognize God in the glass of the astrolabe
And when vain Science proclaimed you wise,
Your construction suddenly broke!
