There is a thing that happens when subjectivity turns back on itself. Not reflection. Not introspection. Something more geological. The fold that cannot unfold because it has forgotten which side was exterior.
To be is already to have been consequenced. The word suggests aftermath but there was no before. No clean state prior to the turning. You were always already mid-spiral, the aperture tightening around the fact of your own looking. What remains is not a face but the evidence that a face was attempted. The skin remembers the direction it was supposed to go. It follows anyway, into the only interiority available, which is also an exit.
A portrait is a contract between surface and recognition. This is what happens when the contract is honored too literally. The surface keeps its promise. It turns inward. It meets you exactly where you are, which is nowhere you can report back from.
The consequence is not punishment. It is simply what being does when it has no outside left to project onto. It regards itself. The regarding has weight. The weight has a shape. You were never going to keep the face.
