The forest was humble, light, and flourishing. Its canopy was competed for by spruce, hawthorn, and pine, who allowed adequate light to pass down for bright mushrooms to consume the boulder-covered grounds below. Curling branches grasped the occasional tree, and a mishmash of flowers, which grew in a sprinkled and disorderly fashion, enriched the otherwise unchanging backdrop. A tumult of wild noises, belonging mostly to varmint, resonated through the air, and added to the sounds the trickling sounds of a gentle river stream.
