With an expansive practice focusing on sculpture, painting, and printmaking; Mark Schoening employs multiple forms of digital fabrication and design in the production of his work. Initial sketches move in and out of 2D and 3D design software. The final designs are often composed of collections of intricately assembled wooden pieces that have been laser cut and painted with an automotive paint gun. The work exists as a unique analog and digital hybrid. Obsessively repeating compositions are assembled and re-organized, and play within a constant state of information overload. Schoening is interested in how an ongoing dependence on technology and the digital interface influences the way he perceives and conceives the process of contemporary art making.
A new collection of fully digitized kinetic sculpture has been produced with a new found freedom. In this fantasy, the work no longer abides by the constraints of the real world. These new conceptual structures and arrangements operate within a new limitless digitized space. Gravity and Mass are breakable boundaries and the addition of movement offers a unique experience not possible in their previous static physical form. They operate as visual toys for that play with notions of form, line, precarious balance, and optical possibilities.
