The year is 2021, and on the 21st of May, after 17 years, Brood X (Brood 10) Cicadas have begun to emerge. This piece is created to commemorate the event. Initially composed on a purely analog signal path of a holistic analog video synthesizer, the piece was recorded and finished as a GIF animation. The GIF is playing at 18.76fps, or 18.76Hz, the same audible pulse frequency female cicadas produce. The GIF color palette consists of 10 colors to represent the number 10 in Brood 10. The gray and yellow colors of the GIF palette are PANTONE® 17-5104 "Ultimate Gray" and PANTONE® 13-0647 "Illuminating" official PANTONE colors of the year 2021. Showing an abstract cicada in the middle of the image, the foreground noise pattern represents the distinct cicada sound. Shown in the background are the underground tunnels they have left after 17 years.
