This generative artwork, "Chromatic Rewind," is a vibrant meditation on the layers of personal creative history and the evolution of digital tools. Its genesis lies in a cherished piece of DV tape footage captured in London in 2007 – a brightly coloured mural of characters drawn by children, a clip that became a favourite during my VJing years.
Decades later, this digital artefact is re-encountered and recontextualised. The work employs a variation of a video feedback algorithm I first developed in 2013. Originally built as a C++ FreeFrame plugin, the algorithm is now reimagined and brought to life using Three.js, allowing it to run generatively within a web browser. This transition itself speaks to the dialogue between past and present: the raw energy of the original analogue-to-digital capture, the foundational logic of an older personal algorithm, and the accessible, web-native power of today's creative coding environments.
More than just a visual piece, "Chromatic Rewind" treats these digital elements – the DV footage, the VJ clip, the 2013 algorithm – as historical artefacts from my own creative journey. They are not merely old files but markers of past explorations, now recombined to birth something new. The resulting NFT is a generative video piece, capturing this dynamic process.
This work is minted on the Tezos blockchain, embedding this personal history and its contemporary iteration into a new form of digital permanence.
