“Cellulose Soup” is the result of cogitechnaut’s first walk in latent space. Generated in October of 2021, a transfer learning technique was used on the StyleGAN2 model to create a memorial to a dying urban Forest. The video shows machine generated grassy framed images with tree stumps morphing into insects, mushrooms and finally, to birds. Within this process the multitude of life forms that exist within an urban forest are recalled. This video is part of a larger project titled “Arboreal Intuitions” an interactive installation consisting of a database of drawings generated by the model, a pen plotter, generative sound, and video projections. Details of the process and concepts behind the project can be found in my article titled Crip-Techno-Tinkerism: A Neurodivergent Learning Style Meets Machine Learning” published in Leonardo Journal volume 1 57, Number 2, 2024, pp. 173-178.
