Bitcoin is the first commodity money that isn’t backed by anything physical. Instead, bitcoin is backed by the mathematics underlying its blockchain technology and controlled supply distribution. This animation shows some of the math behind bitcoin’s supply emission, a chart showing the continuous uptrend of long-term bitcoin holders, and a blimp flying overhead that breaks down some other technical aspects of bitcoin. As there is a limited supply of Bitcoin (21 million), the bitcoin mining reward decreases over time (-50% approximately once every four years) to prevent all the bitcoins from being distributed too soon. More specifically, bitcoin mining produces a block reward once every 10 minutes, which is halved every 210,000 blocks. This is the only way new bitcoins can be added to the network. Bitcoin’s limited supply and censorship resistance also add to its value.
