BEGININGS
I have always been a dreamer, it’s in my blood. I’ve envisioned myself writing this book for a long time. It took me years to get to this point, because truthfully I have never really known how to start…
“There are things in everyone’s life that define the person you become” I have heard this said before, the person I am today is not who I thought i would be, that is to say I never really imagined it this way.
The rain was coming down hard. Big, heavy rain drops were hitting the windows. BAM! BAM! BAM! The front door seemed to be hit so hard that it was going to fly open. My mom opens the door, my brother, Alex and I, standing at her legs.
At the door two soaked police officers in long trench coats and hats wrapped in plastic, water dripped off them, red and blue lights danced in the night behind them.
They say something to my mom, I’m too young to know what they are saying… My mom starts to cry uncontrollably and she tells my brother and I that she loves us.
What I didn’t understand at the time was that the police were at our home because my father, Remijio, had been found with his throat slit in a local river.
A drug deal gone bad, they took the money and the drugs and killed my dad. This is my earliest memory and one of my most vivid, I think about it often, and I know this was a defining moment in my life, I was three years old.
In those days we lived comfortably in a big house on a few acres of land my father had bought working for Rafael Caro Quintero, the infamous drug lord, known for founding the Sinaloa Cartel.
