This particular summer day was cold, windy and rainy. The easy thing to do for sunset was certainly to stay home.
In these instances, you have two options. Either succumb to the bad weather and stay put; or do the opposite and step out the door, inviting the universe to share something precious with you along the way. That day I chose the latter, reminding myself, “you’ll never know if you don’t go,” a phrase I’ve coined to represent this recurring choice we face in both life and photography— sometimes the hardest part is simply showing up.
About twenty minutes after arriving, the moment I did not know I was waiting for happened. Though it was still drizzling, at the horizon the clouds began to break. In a matter of seconds, two massive beaming rays of golden light broke through the clouds; an unmistakably profound moment. In the distance, a lone figure also cherished the heavenly display in front of us.
Sometimes the most extraordinary, beautiful moments happen on cloudy days.
