When the Alkaaran army began their initial offensive on Ophidae City, he took the role of a soldier and fought well and saved a large number of citizens of Ophidae City.

And that is what saved him of get exiled from Ophidae City, as Sardas hostility towards him was well known in the city. Ayouma was not impressed by Sardas, and Sardas didn't like to have around anybody who wasn't under his control. But Ayouma was not expelled from the city, instead, he was promoted and became Captain again, but this time of the Emperor's Personal Guard.
