Goal of alchemists in all cultures is to carry out qualitative changes inside an animate or inanimate object, its "rebirth" & transition to "new level". Alchemy, which deals with obtaining gold, making preparations & potions, pills of immortality, studying deep (occult) essence of substances & chemical reactions, is called external alchemy. Transmuting spirit, achieving absolute health or even immortality with help of certain exercises - internal alchemy.
