Adanmma

Adanmma is a maiden spirit mask with origins in Enugu-Igbo town in eastern Nigeria. She dances to peculiar music and is one of the few masquerades without any spiritual connotation or ritual manifestation. She performs mostly during festive periods, featuring at traditional celebrations and special occasions like the New yam festival, funerals, coronations, carnivals and so on.

Adanmma is a phenomenal dancer and has this mysterious prowess of dancing with so much energy for so many hours. She is usually presented in a skit; where a beautiful young lady refuses to marry any of her suitors, exhibiting a show of shyness and modesty in a flirtatious way. This skit is performed with the whole family - her siblings and parents. This “show off” illustrates 'Iyanga' - a vanity show often attributed to the feminine gender.
