A Killer Lay in Wait
‘You are right. His silence is deafening. It’s the silence of the primeval forest, heavy with threats.’ Albert Camus, The Fall
It had become an obsession. Every morning he awoke to face his dreaded adversary. The dark enemy was always waiting. Waiting to surround him. Take him into its clutches. Expose the nakedness of his innermost fears. It was the forest that was waiting.
He would always be alone. A sense of loneliness and isolation would always grow stronger the deeper into the forest he went. The feelings of dread would never leave him. The incessant twittering of birds that always hit such a serene and calming note in the tranquility of the home sounded louder. And yet more distant. Their presence serving only to remind him that any cry for help would fall on the deaf ears of an uncaring universe. Living nature would be unmoved by his fate.
As the widening woodland enveloped him, he felt increasingly exposed to his hidden enemy. He knew that when the attacker came for him there would be no escape. Any move he made would be easily anticipated. His absolute exposure perfectly matched by the enemy’s cloak of concealment amid the forest’s darkened undergrowth.
